What purpose are designer dogs bred for?

I just heard an argument from a DD lover.

"Breeds didn't just appear. They were bred over hundreds of years to be what they are today. They were all mutts once, but they were bred for a purpose. Its the same way with Designer dogs. Just because they aren't a breed you accept doesn't make them mutts."

She basically said that designer dogs were created for a purpose. Do any designer breeders out there do it for anything OTHER than money? If so, I'm waiting. What purpose do you have?

Designer dogs…?

Many people either are unaware that designer dogs are mutts, or beleive that they were entirely created by inferior specimens of the breed. Is it not possible to have an accident? Is it not possible to have less-than ethical people showing their PBs that may createa mixed breed from them? Everyone loves the sound of money.

I don't beleive in intentional mutts, but I don't beleive in everything going exactly as planned. A man in the show-world came through my work one day, said he'd payed the stud service for his (can't remember) to breed only to have his male pug tie with her upon coming home.

Does anyone agree with me that not ALL designer dogs are from inferior specimines? Granted, worth 2k, no. But things are only worth what's willing to be paid, so why not charge that?
I see no reason to kill all accidents. Unless their's something wrong with the pups in question, why not let them the chance to live? As much as I understand that breeding can be heartwrnching, I do not beleive that it should be heartless.
Sniffydog- When I was talking about killing pups it was in response to the first answer, which said to shoot or cull (kill) all the non PB pups in a litter borne of two fathers. Just so that we're clear.

What do you think of designer dogs?

Everyone now days seems to be breeding these so called "designer dogs". Mutts that cost tons of money and are a shame to the standers. I think they can even get them registered though some back yard registry now. What do you think about people breeding their dogs to produce "mutts" and do you think its a good or bad thing? I seem to hate it, but I see more and more people everyday wanting them and breeding them. Do you think its ruining the "real" breeds and their standers?

Designer dogs, why do people do it?

I have seen questions about "What type of personality would their malti-poo have?" or "Does a Pom-Chi shed?" Or "What will their Bull-Shih look like when it grows up?"

Do people not understand that these are mutts? There is really no way of knowing which breed it will get the dominant genes from! I have read repeatedly that they are healthier than pure-bred dogs. How can that be true when there are no reputable breeders who would breed these mixed breed mutts? And the dogs they use for breeders aren't the best quality! Therefore, the puppies can't be expected to be the healthiest either!

Research also proves that mixed breeds and not pure bred dogs are the type of dog most often involved in inflicting bites to people.

So, my question is, Why INTENTIONALLY breed these mutts?

Designer dogs!!!!!?

Why the heck would someone pay for a mix breed dog! That is what designer dogs are!! MIX BREED MUTTS!! I just do not get it!! I can adopt a great mix breed dog from the pound. Can someone give me any reason why this is being done and why people are paying money for them!! How about places I can go to see pictures of these so called designer dogs!! When I starting hearing about this I thought it was a joke!! ha ha
So far I agree totally with you both!!
Man I looked at some of those and holly cow they are ugly!!!! I have seen better looking dogs at the pound! I will say somewhere cute but some where down right scary!!!! Sorry but they are all MUTTS! I would rather goto the pound and get a good mix breed from there and give it a home rather then pay money to a backyard breeder for a Mutt that cost more then a Purebred!!
Oh and by the way I own a great shepard mix that was adopted from the pound and also a prue bred akita.

Can designer dogs become purebreds?

Ok so everyone one here fusses about designer dogs because supposedly they are all puppy mill mutts. Ok i don't agree with that statement, but i'm not gonna argue the fact that some breeders are running puppy mills. Ok on to my question, if you have 2 purebred dogs, different breeds and they mate to have a "designer breed". If that designer breed dog mates with another one of the same designer breed, and so on and so on down through the generations, when will that breed quit being referred to as a "mutt" and be considered a purebred.
Ok i'm so sick of the stuck up my dogs better than your dog cause someone created him 100 years ago BS on here get over yourself... stick with the question or dont bother to answer! BTW your dog is a mutt too it didn't just appear as a purebred out of thin air, just cause the AKC recognizes it doesnt make it any better than any other dog AKC registered or not!
btw, i'm not a breeder and don't plan on breeding, 2nd I didn't get a designer dog because i thought it was cool, i got a chiweenie, cause it belonged to a friend who couldnt keep it and i saved it from going to the shelter, 3rd i've had purebred dogs my entire life, and i can honestly say i've never owned a purebred that was smarter or better tempered than my mixed breed.

Your opinion about “designer dogs”?

I was just wondering if anyone else out there gets outraged when they hear people use the term designer dog. I work at a dog store (no not petland we sell apparel, toys, etc.). When customers ask what kind of dog I have I say he what he is-american eskimo, min. poodle, bischon mix so basically a mutt. I have had some people go "oh well I have a designer dog he's a labardoddle (or another kind) (sp?)". And if they are really snippy with me I say "Yep guess mine's a designer too I guess he is a ekibipoo!" Then kind of laugh! I'm sorry but you're dog is a mutt! I know certain dogs are breed to by hypoallergenic and all that but it is still a mutt! I love mutts nothing wrong with them! There is nothing designer about a dog! It enrages me to think that someone is paying 0 or more for a mutt! Believe me a dog is priceless no matter what! Mine is spoiled rotten! What are your feelings?
I am so glad I am not alone! I feel like I only know a few ppl that feel the same as me!

Why the Interest in Designer Dogs?

Seriously... I want to know what makes the odd combinations of designer dogs so popular all of a sudden? Convince me that these overpriced mutts, bred by BYBs and puppy mills are so much better than a registered dog or even a good ol' Heinz 57 from a shelter.

I have nothing against the dogs themselves. I'm sure most of them are perfectly nice animals. They can't help the situation they were born into. It's the greeders I am dead against, the people that breed with no regard to the dogs' welfare, the only reason the litter is produced is to fill their pockets.

I was messing around this afternoon and came up with this poem. This is for everyone that buys or breeds these designer dogs.

Ode to Designer Dogs

Morkie, Schnorkie, Cockapoo,
When will they learn,
They don’t breed true!

Maltipoo or Labradoodle…
Want that coat type?
Then buy a Poodle!

There’s no such thing as a ‘teacup’.
If I hear it again,
I’m afraid I’ll throw up!

Pomchi, Chorkie, Bostonese…
Ain’t no big deal,
They still get fleas.

Paparanian, Schnoodle, Boxador,
What on earth
Are they bred for??

Puggle, Chug, Jug, Maltipug,
Want a dog that snores?
Just buy a Pug!

Goldendoodle, Chiweenie, Borderjack,
The combination of mutts
We’ll never lack.

Doberdoodle, Cavichon, Aussiedor,
If you buy one,
They’ll just breed more.

Corkie, Bocker, Pekapoo,
Do backyard breeders
Realize what they do?

Bitches in cages, just living to breed.
No love, no care,
Just victims of greed.

For every buyer that believe their lies.
In a shelter somewhere,
Another dog dies.
*************************
So... let's hear the whys of designer dogs. I want to try to understand.
Added:
Hayesbrat... I just want to gently correct you on something. Not ALL small dogs are nasty, evil little animals. I have 2 little Papillons that are the sweetest little girls you can imagine. You cannot generalize... that's no better than saying all Pit Bulls are vicious killers or all Labradors are stupid. It's all in how they're raised.

Get to know a small dog. You may be surprised.
Krystal P... I am not saug that these dogs are not wonderful. Most any dog is a fantastic companion. All I am trying to do is educate people that they are NOT breeds and are never bred by responsible breeders, but instead by BYBs and puppymills who caee only for the money, not the dog.

Chugs are not a breed and by calling them by the designer dog lable, you are doing these animals a great disservice by encouraging the 'must have the latest fad' mindset.

Bless you for adopting your dog, but please drop the cutesy name and call her what she is- a Pug/Chi cross.

And BTW- the Ode to Designer Dogs was all in fun. I am not putting down the DOGS... but the unscrupulous people that breed them.

Should I Breed "Designer Dogs"?

I've been breeding small dogs with my mother since you could say 6mths of age, but now we both are alittle curious to see what is in the making of a healthy designer. We bred once and got gourgoues pups here's a photo
-http://i8.tinypic.com/4r8mi2r.jpg
These are the only two but aren't they precious?
The doctor said they are in healthy if not the healthiest condition for a young newborn, which means we choose the best *hehe*. So do you think we should continue?

-All sugesstions welcomed
God Bless,
Kieana
-I would Like to choose the second answer as the best answer.

Everyone had answers and trust me I respect everyones answer which is why I've pretty much been conviced to not do much with designer dogs. Of course they are mutts and people just strap a name on them and then boom they sell for over 600 dollars. So many of them do suffer in shelters and these two pups will have a very special home will me and my little 2-year old who loves them already....Again thank you very much and God Bless

Kieana
