A few questions...And I DON'T want simply links to biased, ridiculous one-sided web sites that are nothing but skewed propaganda. These are SERIOUS questions. Enlighten us, those of us who BELIEVE in our registered, well-bred dogs. Make us see the light, the error of our ways.
For the OWNERS:
- What made you decide to get a mutt costing hundreds of dollars rather than rescuing the *same* type of dog from a shelter and saving a life? If you wanted the dog for a specific purpose, why didn't you go with an established breed that has been doing this job for many years?
- Were you swayed in any way by the cutesy designer dog name tag-Labradoodle, Goldendoodle, Puggle, POMCHI (ick) etc. or was it the appearance of the dog that drew you?
- Has your designer dog lived up to the hype? Is it truly hypoallergenic? Has it been healthier than a purebred? Have there been any behavior problems at all?
- At what age did you get your puppy? Did it have any sort of health guarantee? Up to date on all shots & worming?
For the BREEDERS: (of course you may answer the above questions as well IF YOU HAVE THE GUTS)
-Why do you feel your dogs are better than purebreds that have been bred for generations to breed true?
- Do you offer any sort of health guarantees on the puppies you sell? Are the parents tested for any genetic defects?
- Why do you feel the need to show your ignorance by making claims like 'all purebreds are mutants' and lies like all purebreds are sickly, purebreds are going to go extinct, etc. If you had the intelligence to crack a book, you would see that purebred dogs have been established for hundreds or even thousands of years and are not going to 'go extinct' any time soon. By insulting show breeders and their WELL BRED dogs, you are only showing your ignorance, no more.
- What goals have you set in your 'breeding program'? And no, making a ton of money does not count as a goal. What do you look for when choosing a sire for your brood b*tch?
- You claim that purebreds are so unhealthy... and yet what are you using as your 'foundation stock'? Yup... PUREBREDS. What makes this any different? And no, don't throw up the hybrid vigor card. It's a myth with absolutely no proof of truth behind it.
Anyone else have questions they would like to see answered?
C'mon, designer dog fans... here is your chance to sway us all with well thought out answers!! Let's hear it!
Well... it wouldn't have done any good at all for me to NOT show my bias for purebreds, because anyone that has seen any of my Q & As here KNOWS how I feel. What I am doing with this question is giving the designer dog people a chance to give their side of the story. No, it won't change my mind, but maybe I can UNDERSTAND a little more. I genuinely want to hear their thoughts.
And Aussie Mom... that wasn't my question to 'Show Breeders' that was deleted, it was BSL's. I did use some of her thoughts in this one, tho.
Luvexotics- People like your grandma are truly the victims in my eyes. And I don't know why this wouuld get deleted because I am asking legitimate questions; I honestly want to see the other side of the coin. This place is supposedly here to EDUCATE, correct? Why delete a question that could teach?
Lily... I resent you saying I have 'breedism'... I love all dogs, regardless of their breed or cross. It is not the fault of the DOG in any way, shape or form. I will consider adopting a mix from a shelter in the future when I am no longer going to be showing.
The reason I chose purebreds is because I like the predictability of that choice. I know a Gordon Setter is always going to look like a Gordon Setter.
The folks I see suffering from 'breedism' are those that purchase a designer dog and refuse to call it what it is- a mix, and instead hang those stupid designer tags on the dog.
No... all breeds were not mutts. I think you need to do a little further research, honey. And even in the early days of developing a breed, people did not just toss two dogs together because they were 'cute'. Research was done to isolate certain desirable traits... something I do not see designer breeders doing. And VERY few test hips, elbows, etc. Thank you for your honesty tho.
No, Dog Lover... I didn't say people with designer dogs got them for their looks... That's what I am asking, WHAT made you decide on this particular dog? OF COURSE I think my dogs are adorable. I bought my Gordons as show dogs, so yes, looks played a huge part. But if I didn't like the breed's disposition, I wouldn't have them. The Papillons are strictly pets, and I love both looks and disposition.
Your answer is actually exactly what I am looking for... I am genuinely interested in the WHYS. Thank you.
Lui's My Boy... I LOVE YOU! That is EXACTLY how I feel too! I have had people I work with make comments about Nick, since he's a show dog, how it must be boring having to keep him locked up all the time, why so I want a dog like that, blah blah blah. What they don't see is that he is the sweetest, goofiest, most loving boy in the world, who sleeps in my bed, rolls in the mud and romps with the other dogs. He doesn't know if he's reg. or mixed, and he doesn't care. I would love him just the same if he never stepped foot in a ring again. I don't love him BECAUSE he's a show dog... I show him because I love him.
Crud... It doesnt look like those that could really answer the tough questions are brave enough to answer.
Come out, come out wherever you are...
Oh well... I tried. I guess those who could have truly enlightened us are just cowards. Maybe we can all try posting this again in the future? SOMEbody may get an answer...
