Then didn't they go into a massive inbreeding process to set the characteristics which left the dogs less healthy because they were less genetically stable and made it more probable for weak subordinate genes to manifest themselves in weaknesses in those dogs?

Perhaps one of the most common (and worst) arguments I have ever heard for designer dogs is that a dog with a known ancestry is not a mutt.
When did this become a rule? If I had a golden/beagle mix that I was POSITIVE about the ancestry of because the person who I got the dog from had both parents on site, but I acquired this dog before the whole designer dog craze, does this mean I actually have a designer dog?
I'm begging those who bought a designer dog off of a "breeder" to explain this one to me. What makes a designer dog different from a mutt? The price tag? The CKC and UKC papers? The "breeder"? The name? I simply do not get it.

I need a site that spells out why they're bad and why you shouldn't get them. Thanks so much.

I had never even heard of____-a-poos and the like until about a year ago. Is this a relatively new craze?
Also, I adopted a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Lab mix from the human society a few years ago.....help me think up a good "designer" name I can tell people when they ask what type of dog she is......

Whoever thought it was a good idea to breed a pug w/ a beagle, a golden retriever with a POODLE, a lab with a poodle, and so on is a moron. those breeds should have never been mixed. Oh and also- there is no such thing as a "purebred" goldendoodle, etc.
Ok-- that's what I meant-- the stupid people breeding them for the money.. etc.

i'm curious to know, how many of you think it's a waste of money to buy a better quality of dog food, but yet spent hundreds on a mutt (Designer Dog)? did you spend hundreds on the purchase of your mutt, but feed a low quality of food?
i spend a reasonable amount of money on my dog food, CANIDAE, but have paid NOTHING for my 5 mutts. i care more about their health than my own.

I know that this has been on here before, but I have to raise the question again to see some different answers. It's not that I'm against cross-breeding, etc. - I've owned both shelter dogs/mixes and pedigrees, and I think that either can be the best companions. I feel that genetically engineered dogs with "designer" names are a scam to get more money for "mutts." I have a Pit Bull/Schnauzer mix... could I breed her with another and call her a Schnitt Bull, or perhaps a Bull Schnitt, and push for the AKC to register the breed to make money?
No flames please... just my opinion. How do you all feel about it?
Just to clarify - my pup has been spayed since she was 9 weeks old - I couldn't leave the shelter with her unless she was (or it would have been done, just not so early). I, by no means, am intending to breed her as a "designer dog" - it was just a sarcastic example.
And with my saying that I'm not against cross-breeding - I just mean that I'm not a pedigree snob... I'm a "dog-lover" and to me that means that I'll love a mutt and a pedigree all the same!
